Luton is believed to have been settled by the Anglo-Saxons in the sixth century and its name first appears in the eighth century as Lygetun, a form taken to mean a farmstead by the River Lea. The Domesday Book records it as Loitone and as Lintone, when farming dominated the local economy and the population was around 700 to 800. Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester began work on St Mary's Church in 1121 and it was finished by 1137. A castle of motte-and-bailey type, which gave Castle Street its name, was raised in 1139 and gone by 1154. Hatmaking began in the 17th century. Luton became a borough in 1876 and Vauxhall Motors opened its plant in 1907. The old town hall was burned in 1919 during Peace Day unrest. Leagrave, Limbury and Stopsley were absorbed between 1928 and 1933. Air raids in the Second World War killed 107 people. The area holds 87 listed buildings, with St Mary's the only Grade I.
