The Welsh name Llandrindod means trinity parish. Before the 1860s the site was common land in the parish of Llanfihangel Cefnllys. In the mid-18th century the local spring waters drew visitors and a hotel was built at Llandrindod Hall. Dolysgallog Farm, beside the Cwmygof Well, became a boarding house in the 1820s. Enclosure of the common in 1862 allowed new streets, hotels, shops and houses. A lake was formed in the early 1870s. In 1893 Archdeacon Henry de Winton had the old church and Cefnllys church unroofed and both were restored in 1895. A Catholic church was founded in 1907 and the first Archbishop of Wales was elected in the town in 1920. Soldiers and wounded were housed there in the First World War. Llandrindod became the county town of Powys in 1974. Of 21 listed buildings near the centre, the Automobile Palace is Grade II*.
