A short history of Liskeard
The name Lyskerrys joins a Cornish word for a court or administrative centre to the personal name Kerrys. King Dungarth is said to have held his court here. Domesday records Liscarret as an important manor with a mill paying 12d yearly and a market paying 4s. William the Conqueror passed the manor to Robert, Count of Mortain, who kept it in demesne. It has since passed with the Duchy of Cornwall. A Norman castle followed but fell into disuse. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, granted the market charter in 1240. John Leland saw only minor remains of the castle in 1538 and Sir Richard Carew agreed in 1602. Tin mining made the town a stannary and coinage centre before the 20th century. The telegraph arrived in 1863. Of 163 listed buildings near the centre, the Guildhall, Stuart House, the Parish Church of St Martin and a cross beside it are Grade II*.
