A short history of Launceston

The Cornish name Lannstevan refers to a church enclosure of St Stephen, taken from a monastery at the northern end of the present town. The Saxon name Dunheved was used for the castle and the settlement that grew around it. An early Cornish mint operated at Launceston around the time of Æthelred the Unready, before 994. Robert, Count of Mortain, built the castle about 1070. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Launceston as held by the Count of Mortain, with his castle there, land for 10 ploughs, 1 villein, 13 smallholders, 2 mills and 40 acres of pasture. Its value had fallen from £20 to £4. The main market moved from St Stephen's to Dunheved that year. Launceston later served as the county town until 1838. Cuthbert Mayne was executed there in 1577. In 1643 Royalist forces under Ralph Hopton drove back a Parliamentarian advance on Beacon Hill. The town holds 169 listed buildings, among them six at Grade I, including the castle keep, both castle gatehouses, the South Gate, the West Bridge and the Church of St Mary Magdalene.
