A short history of Kiveton Park

Kiveton takes its name from an Anglo-Saxon term for a settlement in a hollow. The Domesday Book records it as "Ciuetone", held by William de Warenne. Ownership later moved to the de Keuton family. In 1580 the estate was bought by the heirs of Sir William Hewett, a former Lord Mayor of London who died in 1567. His descendant Thomas Osborne, the first Duke of Leeds, had Kiveton Hall built in 1698. George William Frederick Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds, demolished it in 1812 and local legend links this to a wager with the Prince of Wales. Hornby Castle then took over as the principal seat of the Dukes of Leeds. Seven Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
