A short history of King's Lynn
The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Lun and Lenn, assigning it to the Bishop of Elmham as well as the Archbishop of Canterbury and it also mentions saltings at Lena. The origin of the name is uncertain. Development began in the early 10th century on a constricted site near where the Great Ouse reaches the Wash. In 1101 Bishop Herbert de Losinga began the first medieval town between the Purfleet and Mill Fleet, commissioning St Margaret's Church and authorising a Saturday market. Known as Bishop's Lynn, the town received Royal Port status from King John and ranked as England's most important port in the 14th century. After a fire the Trinity Guildhall was built again in 1421 and Hanse House dates from 1475. Lynn gained a mayor in 1524 and became King's Lynn in 1537. Henry Bell designed the Custom House in 1683. The town has 310 listed buildings, among them 13 at Grade I, including St Margaret's Church, the Custom House, Red Mount Chapel and Greyfriars Tower.
