A short history of Kings Hill

The land that became Kings Hill was occupied by RAF West Malling, an airfield that operated during both world wars. Its Second World War defences included a Bofors anti-aircraft gun tower, a Pickett-Hamilton fort and a pillbox, which are now a scheduled monument. The area also has four Grade II listed buildings, among them Great Canon Court, a barn to its west and several former barracks buildings. Development of the old airfield began in 1989 under Liberty Property Trust, as a mix of housing and business space. The oldest parts lie around Worcester Avenue and Discovery Drive. Many roads take their names from apple varieties, reflecting fruit growing in Kent, while others recall the wartime aircraft of the aerodrome. By 2010 about 2,000 homes had been built with business premises of 800,000 square feet. The intended total is 2,750 dwellings with commercial premises covering two million square feet. In May 2010 plans were unveiled to redevelop the land around the derelict control tower, now a listed building.
