A short history of Killingworth
Killingworth first appears in documents in 1242, when it was listed among the lands of Roger de Merlay III. Nine taxpayers were noted in 1296 and eight by 1312, while a survey of the township in 1373 listed sixteen tenements. From the early 17th century Newcastle races were run on Killingworth Moor, which covered 1,800 acres of common land until racing moved to the Town Moor. The 1841 census counted 112 people in 14 dwellings, with two rows of cottages along the road and a terrace had appeared by the middle of the century, possibly linked to the growing mines. Construction of the new town began in 1963 on 760 acres of derelict colliery land, undertaken by Northumberland County Council and first called Killingworth Township. Four listed buildings stand near the centre, three at Grade II and the British Gas Research Station including its attached restaurant block at Grade II*.
