A short history of Horncastle

Horncastle began as a fortified Roman settlement with walls that survive in places. The Saxons called it Hyrnecastre, a name referring to a Roman fort on the land between the River Bain and the River Waring. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Hornecastre with 41 households, 100 acres of meadow and two mills, all held by King William I. The Pipe Rolls of 1130 give the form Hornecastra. In the 13th century the town gained a Crown market charter and its horse fair probably began. St Mary's church, a Grade II* building, also dates from that century. The Battle of Winceby took place four miles away in 1643. Ewan Christian restored St Mary's from 1859 to 1861. The Stanhope Memorial was raised in the Market Place in 1894 and the last horse fair was held in 1948. Near the centre stand 117 listed buildings, including six Grade I sections of Roman wall.
