A short history of Holbeach
Roman and Romano-British pottery has been found in and around Holbeach and the name comes from the Old English holbæc, meaning hollow ridge. Thomas de Moulton, a local baron, received a market charter in 1252 and floods were recorded that century. All Saints' Church dates from the 14th century and Sir John of Kirton founded All Saints' Hospital in 1351. Floods recurred in the 16th century. In 1615 agents of the Earl of Argyll gained a claim to reclaimed land but work stalled after 1634. Enclosure in 1660 added 9,798 acres to the parish and the church porch was built around 1700. An embankment under an Act of 1793 added more land and the remaining marsh was enclosed in 1840. A Baptist chapel opened in 1845. Of 30 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of All Saints is the only Grade I.
