A short history of Hindley
Hindley takes its name from Old English words for a clearing frequented by female deer. Before 1066 it was a berewick, one of fifteen attached to Newton, a royal manor and afterwards it belonged to the Barony of Makerfield. The name appears as Hindele in 1212 and the present spelling is first recorded in 1479. Free tenants held the area until 1330, when Robert Langton passed the lordship to his younger son. His descendants kept it until its sale to the Duke of Bridgewater in 1765. Coal mining is recorded from 1528 and nail making was noted from the 17th century to the 19th. Cotton manufacturing took hold towards the close of the 1600s and Richard Battersby built the first cotton factory at Lowe Mill in 1785. John Pennington built his first power-driven mill in 1822. Residents numbered 2,300 in 1811 and 23,000 by 1911. Most collieries and mills closed between the wars. Twelve Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Southworth House, the Church of St Peter and Higher Barn Farmhouse.
