A short history of Hemsworth

Hemsworth was an agricultural village for centuries and its name means Hymel's enclosure. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Hemeleswrde and a twelfth century record gives Hymelswrde. The church of St Helen dates from the eleventh or twelfth century with the chancel rebuilt in the fourteenth. Robert Holgate, believed to be a native of the village, was consecrated Archbishop of York in 1544. A grammar school was established in October 1546 under letters patent from Henry VIII. Almshouses followed through Holgate's will of April 1555 and he died in 1556. An act of parliament brought enclosure in 1803 with common land going mainly to Sir Francis Wood and partly to Earl Fitzwilliam. A new school building opened in January 1868 but the school moved to Barnsley in 1888. Coal mining grew in the later nineteenth century. Six Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
