A short history of Hazlemere

Hazlemere began as a minor hamlet within Desborough Hundred and its name dates back to the 13th century. The crossroads at its centre was where the parishes of Penn, Hughenden and Chepping Wycombe once met. A church parish for Hazlemere was set up in 1847. In the early 20th century farming remained the main occupation. In Edwardian times cherry orchards covered much of the land and brickmaking took place at Old Kiln and Oakengrove. During the 1930s the countryside gave way to unplanned building until the Second World War stopped it. A prisoner of war camp was built in the grounds of Hazlemere Park and afterwards gave temporary homes to refugees from Europe before closing in 1956. Housing increased greatly in the 1960s and 1970s, with large developments on the Park and on Brackley, Hill and Manor Farms. One Grade II listed building stands near the centre, Hazlemere War Memorial.

Open space includes Badger Way Park, Hazlemere Recreation Ground and Spinney, along with Widmer Fields, which takes in Ash Field, Oak Field and The Orchard. A number of children's playgrounds are also found within about a mile of the centre and some facilities sit just outside the town itself.
