In early December 1642 Parliamentarians under Herbert Morley defeated Edward Ford's Royalists on Muster Green after about an hour of hand-to-hand fighting. The station opened on 12 July 1841 and growth followed from around 200 people in the early 1850s. An asylum and a cattle market opened in 1859 and the Priory of Our Lady of Good Counsel (Grade II) was built in 1886. A separate civil parish and urban district formed in 1894. The town passed to West Sussex in 1974. It has 86 listed buildings including Grade II* entries such as Wincote, Lucas's, the Church of St Wilfrid, Malling Priory, Hospital Farmhouse and Barnlands.
