Vikings named the settlement from Old Norse as the farm of a man called Hákr around the 9th century. A Viking cross base at St Mary's Church and a cross shaft found nearby in 1978 support that date. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the place as Haxebi. The village lay in the royal Forest of Galtres until Charles I gave up the forest in 1629 and the village gained land to form a parish of about 2,100 acres. The church was built in the 16th century and Haxby gained parish status in 1862. Victorian redevelopment and the railway made it a place to commute from. Rapid growth came in the 1970s. The centre became a conservation area in 1976 and Haxby a town in 1992.
