In 771 King Offa of Mercia defeated the Haestingas tribe and the name Hastingas first appears in the late 8th century, from an Old English tribal name linked to a leader called Hæsta. Athelstan set up a royal mint in 928. Danish attacks and floods in 1011 and 1014 prompted townspeople to relocate. William won the Battle of Hastings at Senlac Hill on 14 October 1066 and ordered a castle built. The New Burgh was founded in 1069. The 1086 Domesday Book names the New Burgh and shows Hastings as a borough. A flood in 1287 washed away much of the town and part of the castle. The French burnt the town in 1339 and 1377. Hastings Castle is Grade I listed among 189 listed buildings nearby.
