A short history of Great Dunmow
Dunmow is an Old English name meaning "hill meadow". A Roman town grew where Stane Street met the roads linking Sudbury with London and Cambridge with Chelmsford. By 951 Church End was occupied again and the name Dunmow first appears in the record. A church stood there by 1045. The Domesday Book of 1086 records ten estates within Dunmow, shared among eight owners. A market charter followed in 1227. St Mary's church at Church End was rebuilt in the 13th century. Mary I made Great Dunmow a borough in 1555 and the Old Town Hall dates from 1578, with a revised charter in 1590. The borough was abolished in 1886. In the Second World War the town lay on the GHQ Line of defences and Easton Lodge became RAF Great Dunmow. The centre holds 180 listed buildings, including The Clock House at Grade I.

Dunmow Bowls Club is the named sports facility in the town and is listed as a sports centre for bowls.
