A short history of Gorleston-on-Sea

Gorleston appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Gorlestuna, when it was already a port town. In 1130 it is recorded as Gurlestona. The name probably begins with a personal name, possibly linked to the word girl. In the Middle Ages the town, then in Suffolk, had a pair of manors as well as a lesser manor named Bacons. Its fishing port became a centre for herring, supported by salt pans that produced salt to preserve the catch. The medieval church of St Andrew gave its name to the Gorleston Psalter, a 14th-century illuminated work. Southtown, at the northern tip of the parish, grew as a suburb facing Great Yarmouth and was brought within that borough in 1668. The town joined Great Yarmouth in 1836 and Gorleston Barracks were established in 1853. The fishing industry declined rapidly in Edwardian times as the town turned to a seaside resort. Twenty listed buildings stand near the centre, with the Church of St Andrew and the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter both Grade II*.
