A short history of Garstang

The Domesday Book of 1086 records Garstang as Cherestanc. Later spellings include Gairstang in 1195 and Gayrestang in 1292. The name may come from Old Norse words for a gore and a pole or boundary marker, though other meanings such as spear post and meadowland have also been suggested. It possibly marks a meeting place and the market cross may stand on that same site. The Thursday market began in the early 1300s. Greenhalgh Castle was raised in 1490 for Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby. The first stone crossing of the River Wyre came around then. The town hall was finished in 1764. St John Plessington came from Dimples Hall just outside the town. There are 18 Grade II listed buildings near the centre, among them the Coffee Inn, Market House and Royal Oak Hotel and the market cross is a scheduled monument.
