A short history of Galleywood
Galleywood lies across a Roman road. Its common, a landscape shaped by people, appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1250 the place was recorded as Gauelwode, a hamlet of Great Baddow within old forest interspersed with open scrub. The common gave local people grazing, furze, wood and gravel for building and road making. Some farms nearby still have buildings from the 14th century. In early Victorian times the village centred on The Eagle crossroads, The Street and Well Lane, where a school served on Sundays as a Chapel of Ease and a Methodist chapel stood in Well Lane. Council housing arrived in the 1920s, followed by large building programmes in the 1960s and 1970s alongside private development. Galleywood became a separate parish in 1987 and the common gained Local Nature Reserve status in 1993. Six Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Parklands Farmhouse and The Eagle Public House.
