A short history of Filey
A signal station built by the Romans in the fourth century came to light at Carr Naze in 1857. Where the name Filey comes from is not known. St Oswald's Church dates from the 12th century and is Grade I listed. Its tower roof carries medieval graffiti spanning around 400 years. Filey was a small village before visitors from Scarborough began arriving in the 18th century. A lifeboat was obtained in 1804 and in 1835 John Wilkes Unett bought land and built the Crescent. Charlotte Brontë visited in the mid-19th century. In 1888 the whole town was placed in the East Riding. The Dogger Bank earthquake damaged a church spire in 1931. Building of Butlin's holiday camp began in 1939 and a railway branch serving it opened in 1947. Filey joined North Yorkshire in 1974 and the camp closed in 1984. Of 25 listed buildings near the centre the Railway Station is Grade II*.
