A short history of Faringdon

The name Faringdon means a hill covered in fern. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Farendone, a large settlement of 45 households in the hundred of Wyfold in Berkshire. It was held by the king and paid no geld. After the Conquest the Earl of Gloucester built a castle, which Stephen later razed and he built a Cistercian priory on the site. King John established an abbey in 1202 but its monks moved to Beaulieu Abbey in 1203 and the land became an outlying grange. A weekly market granted in 1218 gave the town the name Chipping Faringdon. Thomas Cranley, Archbishop of Dublin, died there in 1417. The abbey lands were sold to wealthy nobles at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1974 Faringdon moved from Berkshire to Oxfordshire. The centre has 116 listed buildings, including the Church Of All Saints at Grade I and the Old Town Hall and Sudbury House at Grade II*.
