A short history of Exeter

Exeter takes its name from the Old English Escanceaster, which joins a form of the river name Exe to a suffix for fortified towns. Coins suggest trade with the Mediterranean by 250 BC. Around AD 55 the Romans built a fort called Isca and a community that became the tribal capital of the Dumnonii grew beside it. In the late 2nd century a wall enclosed a much larger area. Saxons held the city by the seventh century. Danish Vikings briefly captured it in 876 before Alfred the Great expelled them. The foundation of Exeter Cathedral dates to the middle of the 11th century. In 1068 William the Conqueror besieged the city and then had Rougemont Castle built. The city withstood a siege in 1549 and fell to Royalists in September 1643. It now has 731 listed buildings, 22 of them Grade I, among them the Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Nicholas' Priory.
