A short history of Enfield

In Anglo-Saxon times Enfield's manor belonged to Ansgar the Staller, a nobleman who served Edward the Confessor. The name most likely derives from an Old English term for the land of a man called Ēana. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the manor as Enfelde, the property of Geoffrey de Mandeville and lists a priest holding about 30 acres. The parish church of St Andrew is first evidenced in writing in 1136, when it was endowed to Walden Abbey in Essex. In 1303 Edward I granted Humphrey de Bohun a licence for a weekly market and two annual fairs and Enfield became a market town. A second market charter followed in 1617 under James I. The New River runs through the town and its Enfield Loop was cut off from the main route in 1926. London reached the town during the inter-war years. Forty Hall and its screen wall, gateway and north pavilions hold Grade I status, as does the original block of Grovelands Park Hospital, among 258 listed buildings nearby.
