A short history of Ely
Flint tools and a Bronze Age axe and spearhead point to early activity at Ely, with Iron Age and Roman use following. The city grew from an abbey founded in 673 by Saint Etheldreda. Bede recorded the name as Elge around 731 and linked it to the eels caught in the marshes. Danish invaders destroyed the abbey in 870 and Ethelwold, Bishop of Winchester, rededicated it to Etheldreda in 970. The Domesday survey of 1086 ranked the monastery second in wealth in England. Henry II granted the abbot and convent an annual fair on 10 October 1189 and a weekly market has been held in Ely since at least the 13th century. After the Fens were drained Ely ceased to be an island. Today 191 buildings are listed, 25 of them Grade I, including the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the Bishop's Palace, the Cellarers House and the Guest Quarters of the Monastery.
