A short history of Danbury
Danbury stands on the site of an oval hill fort of Neolithic or early Iron Age date. The area was later occupied by the Romans and then by the Dæningas, a Saxon tribe. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Danengeberia in the hundred of Chelmsford, a name meaning the stronghold of the people of Dene. After the Norman Conquest the land and village passed from William the Conqueror to Geoffrey de Mandeville, who became Earl of Essex. In medieval times the village grew from two manors, St Cleres/Herons and Runsell, with a small part of a third called Gibcracks. The Church of St John the Baptist dates from the 13th century and is the oldest building in the village. It is the only Grade I listed building among 35 near the centre and the rest are Grade II. Local tradition says the Devil damaged its spire in 1402. In 1808 Sir Walter Scott stayed at the Griffin Inn while trying to complete Joseph Strutt's Queenhoo Hall.
