At the Conquest the manor belonged to Gytha. William the Conqueror gave the manor to Baldwin in 1087. Amicia Countess of Devon bequeathed it to the Abbot of Buckland Monachorum in 1278 and the town received its first market that year. A water supply followed in 1356. The manor was later sold to Sir John St Ledger. Fifty-one listed buildings stand near the centre including The Walronds and the Church of St Andrew (both Grade I).
