A short history of Colwyn Bay
The name Colwyn may derive from an 11th century nobleman called Collwyn ap Tangno or from the River Colwyn in Old Colwyn. In the 13th century Ednyfed Fychan, who served Llywelyn the Great as a general and councillor, was linked with sites on the western side of the bay at Rhos-on-Sea. In 1399 supporters of Henry Bolingbroke ambushed King Richard II in Old Colwyn as he returned from Ireland. The railway station opened in 1849 as Colwyn and was renamed Colwyn Bay in 1876. The town grew quickly as a seaside holiday destination and from 1875 the Pwllycrochan Estate sold building plots while keeping some control over development. In 1933 the town gained the first British branch of Robert William Griffiths's National Milk Bar company. During the Second World War the Colwyn Bay Hotel housed the Ministry of Food until 1953 and the town became a significant centre for diamond cutting and polishing. The area has 89 listed buildings. The Church of Saint Paul is Grade II* and the rest are Grade II. Bryn Euryn Camp is a scheduled monument.
