A short history of Cinderford

The name Cinderford was recorded in 1258 for a crossing-point and points to waste left by early iron production. Cinderford Ironworks was built in the late 1790s and by 1841 its three furnaces had a yearly output of 12,000 tons of iron. A Baptist church existed by 1843 and a church dedicated to St John the Evangelist was consecrated in 1844. In 1889 a mob killed two performing bears and beat their four French handlers after a false rumour; 13 colliers and labourers faced magistrates. The ironworks closed in 1894 and Trafalgar colliery in 1925. Lightmoor, the main local colliery, closed in 1940 and coal mining declined further in the 1950s and 1960s. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
