A short history of Chipping Norton
Iron Age and Romano-British remains lie on the eastern edge of the town. The name means market north town and the settlement began beneath a hill bearing a motte-and-bailey castle. In 1205 a further marketplace was established on higher ground up the slope. The nave of St Mary's church was largely rebuilt around 1485, probably paid for by the wool merchant John Ashfield. In 1549 the vicar Henry Joyes led a rising that was crushed and he was hanged from the church tower. Henry Cornish founded the almshouses in 1640. Edward Stone sent his findings on willow bark to the Royal Society in 1763. The Town Hall was completed in 1842 and Bliss Tweed Mill was built in 1872. Of 120 listed buildings, St Mary's is Grade I and the mill is one of ten Grade II*.
