A short history of Chinnor
Excavation on the Chiltern ridge within the parish uncovered an Iron Age settlement that may date to the fourth century BC. Romano-British traces have been found there and along the Icknield Way below. A twin barrow on the Way held a Saxon warrior's weapons from the 6th century. The name may once have meant the slope belonging to a man named Ceona. In Edward the Confessor's reign a royal servant named Lewin held the manor and the Domesday Book of 1086 records him still holding Chinnor. Soon afterwards it passed to the Norman de Vernon family, who lost their lands in 1194 after Walter de Vernon declined to assist Prince John in France. A windmill stood at Wainhill by the early 13th century. In 1643 Prince Rupert's Royalist force overcame the Parliamentarian garrison at Chinnor. Lace-making became a significant local trade, with 268 lace-makers recorded in 1851. Of 27 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Andrew is Grade I and the rest Grade II.
