Chesterfield began as a Roman fort dated to roughly AD 80 to 100. The Anglo-Saxon village that followed took its name from two Old English words, ceaster for a Roman fort and feld for pasture. The town lay in the Hundred of Scarsdale. King John granted a market charter in 1204 that made it a free borough. A royalist army defeated rebel barons at the Battle of Chesterfield in 1266. Elizabeth I granted a charter in 1594 or 1598 creating a corporation. George Stephenson began the railway line through the town in 1837 and lived at Tapton House until his death in 1848. The borough absorbed surrounding townships in 1892 and New Whittington and Newbold in 1920 then took its current boundaries in 1974. Of 171 listed buildings, the Church of St Mary and All Saints is Grade I while Tapton House and the Unitarian Chapel are Grade II*.
