Chester began around 75 AD as the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix, founded by the Legio II Adiutrix under Emperor Vespasian. A civilian settlement grew beside it and the 1st century amphitheatre held up to 10,000 people. The army had gone by 410 but the Romano-British community continued. A Welsh force lost to Æthelfrith of Northumbria at the Battle of Chester in 616 and King Æthelred of Mercia founded a minster in 689, now St John's Church. The Anglo-Saxons strengthened the walls against the Danes and Æthelflæd built a new burh, with a church to St Peter founded in 907. King Edgar held court here in 973. In 1071 William the Conqueror made Hugh d'Avranches the first Earl of Chester and he built the castle. Chester gained city status in 1541. Some 720 listed buildings stand near the centre, 59 at Grade I including parts of the city walls and Grosvenor Bridge.
