A short history of Chandler's Ford

A section of Roman road in the area is a scheduled monument. The settlement was first called The Ford and a Hursley map of 1588 records "Charnells foord", which may mean a crossing of Monks Brook on the Hursley Road or one on the Winchester to Southampton road. The Chandler's prefix may date from the late 16th century. Hiltonbury Farm appears on that map and may once have belonged to the Hursley Park Estate before being sold to the Cranbury Park Estate. Few people lived here until the 19th century. An iron church and schools followed in 1889 and a civil parish named Chandlersford was formed in 1897. St Boniface Church was built in 1904. Housing spread across King's Court, Merdon and Hiltingbury in the 1920s and Herbert Collins designed the King's Road Congregational Church in 1929. Four Grade II listed buildings include Hiltonbury Farmhouse.
