A short history of Carnforth

The name Carnforth is thought to come from a ford over the River Keer, with other suggestions pointing to an Anglo-Saxon form recorded as Chreneforde or to the Old English for crane ford. Until the 19th century it was a small village. In 1846 the Carnforth Ironworks Company opened a works near the railway station, helped by the large local limestone deposits. Workers arrived from Worcestershire and lived in the company village of Dudley, now called Millhead. The Carnforth Haematite Company took over in 1864 and raised output with iron ore brought by rail from the Furness Peninsula. Steel production became the focus by 1872 but the Bessemer process had failed by 1879. Carnforth meanwhile became a junction of three major railways. Iron production ended in 1929 and the War Department then used the site as an ordnance depot until the 1960s. Morphy's Mill in Oxford Street made blouses and other garments from the 1920s to the 1980s. The motive power depot closed in 1968. Of 18 listed buildings near the centre, three are Grade II*: the ash plant, the engine shed with its locomotive turntable and the coaling plant.
