A short history of Canvey Island
Roman remains point to settlement beginning between AD 50 and 250, with evidence of a farm, a military post, a cemetery and a large salt-making industry. The name is said to derive from Caningaege, an Anglo-Saxon term for the island of Cana's followers. Saxon settlers introduced sheep farming and the Domesday Book recorded the area as sheep pasture controlled by nine parishes including Laindon and Prittlewell. Manorial records of 1254 give the name as Caneveye. In 1622 Sir Henry Appleton and other landowners began a scheme to wall the island and around 300 Dutch workers reclaimed 3,600 acres. Sheep farming remained the main industry until the 20th century, when the island grew into a seaside resort, expanding fastest in Britain from 1911 to 1951. The North Sea flood of 1953 killed 58 islanders and led to the temporary evacuation of 13,000 residents. Dutch Cottage is among three Grade II listed buildings.
