A short history of Cannock

Cannock appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Spellings recorded afterwards include Chnoc around 1130 then Cnot (1156) Canot (1157) and Canoc (1198). The name probably derives from an Old English word for a hillock changed by Norman pronunciation and may point to Shoal Hill, which lies to the town's north-west. Sir Robert Fisher, 4th Baronet, lived at The Green, a house dating from the 1730s. Cannock remained a small rural community until mining expanded sharply in the mid to late 19th century. Coal deposits and nearness to the Black Country then drew many industries and the area grew rapidly. The Green became the headquarters of Cannock Urban District Council in 1927. Mid Cannock, the last colliery in the town, closed in 1967. Twenty-five listed buildings stand near the centre, including three at Grade II*: the Council House, its gates, railings and gate piers and the Parish Church of St Luke.
