A short history of Caister-on-Sea
Caister's story begins in Roman times, when a fort was built around the year 200 CE to house an army and navy unit. Its military role seems to have shrunk after the Saxon Shore fort at Burgh Castle was constructed across the estuary in the later third century. The site seems to have been left during the 5th century. About 150 Saxon burials lie south of the enclosure and the fort and Saxon settlement is a scheduled monument. Caister Castle was constructed during the 1400s as a home for Sir John Fastolf. An offshore lifeboat has operated here since 1791 and in 1901 nine crew died in the Caister lifeboat disaster. A monument to them, unveiled in 1903, is listed Grade II. Seven listed buildings stand near the centre, led by the Church of Holy Trinity at Grade II*.
