A short history of Caerleon
An Iron Age hillfort at Lodge Wood Camp was occupied from the 5th century BC until the Romans built the fortress of Isca Augusta around 78 AD. Legio II Augusta was based there from about 75 to 300 AD. Around 800 AD the place was called Cair Legeion guar Uisc. The name Caerleon may come from a Welsh phrase for fortress of the legion. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists eight carucates in the jurisdiction of Caerleon held by Turstin FitzRolf under William d'Ecouis, with three Welshmen also on the manor. In 1171 Iorwerth ab Owain and his sons destroyed the town and burned the castle. William Marshal seized the castle in 1217 and rebuilt it in stone. Rhys Gethin took it in 1402. The ruins fell in 1739 and left the Round Tower, a Grade II* listed building. Eleven listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of St. Cadoc and the Endowed School, both Grade II*.
