A short history of Bude
Bude is said to have been settled since the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages the only building here was Efford Manor, home of the Arundells of Trerice and the place was known as Bede's Haven after a holy man who lived on the rock now occupied by the breakwater. In 1577 the quay was rebuilt with money from the Blanchminster charity. The river separated land owned by Sir John Arundell to the south from that of Sir Richard Grenville to the north. During the Civil War Royalists crossed it by Nanny Moore's Bridge. Through the 1700s and 1800s Bude was a busy port for smaller vessels. A storm destroyed the first breakwater in 1838 and a replacement followed in 1839. Victorian visitors came for sea bathing. By 1926 the town had 59 boarding houses and five hotels. Sixteen listed buildings stand near the centre with Ebbingford Manor the highest graded at Grade II*.
