The road between Northampton and Market Harborough ran through it, with inns offering travellers food and drink, beds and fresh horses and The George Inn and The Coach and Horses date from that era. In 1819 Sir Charles Knightley bought land where the Pytchley Hunt built kennels. A Poor Law Union formed in 1835 with a workhouse. In June 1839 the Chartist Robert George Gammage addressed a public meeting despite the vicar Charles Frederic Watkins. The railway opened in 1859 and iron ore quarrying began in 1863. The workhouse closed in 1935. The Hunt left in 1966 and its site became housing. Seven Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
