A short history of Brightlingsea
Brightlingsea occupies a promontory by the River Colne, which surrounded it as an island until the 1500s and an Early Neolithic pot found near the town points to settlement from an early date. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Brictriceseia, a name meaning Brihtric's or Beorhtric's island. The entry lists 24 villagers, 26 smallholders and 5 slaves. It also shows that King Harold Godwinson had held the manor before it went to King William I. Through the Middle Ages settlement developed around the parish church and a port on the shore, trading in oysters, fish and copperas. The town became a limb of Sandwich within the Cinque Ports. By the 1790s it was a busy fishing port. Between 1804 and 1808 Warren's Shipyard turned out eleven gun brigs for the Navy. Large steam yachts were laid up and repaired there from 1860 until 1939. The Mignonette was built in 1867. Of 35 listed buildings near the centre, Jacobes Hall is Grade I.
