A short history of Brecon
Brecon began as a Roman military base, linked to the cavalry fort of Y Gaer (Cicucium). Its Welsh name, Aberhonddu, means mouth of the Honddu, while Brecknock probably comes from Brychan, founder of the kingdom of Brycheiniog. Bernard de Neufmarché built the castle in the late 11th century and Gerald of Wales came in 1188 to recruit men for the Crusades. Humphrey de Bohun built the town walls after 1240 and 100 marks went on strengthening them in 1404 during Owain Glyndŵr's rebellion. Edward, Duke of Buckingham built the tower of St Mary's Church in 1510. The priory was dissolved in 1538 and the Dominican friary suppressed that August. The Civil War left the walls largely destroyed. Charles Hansom designed St Michael's Church in 1851 and the priory church became a cathedral in 1923. Brecon has 509 listed buildings, with Grade I status held by Usk Bridge, Ely Tower and the cathedral among others.
