A short history of Braunton
Between 855 and 860 King Æthelbald of Wessex granted ten hides in Brannocminster to Glastonbury Abbey. What lies behind the name Braunton is uncertain, with a place where broom grew and St Brannock both put forward as possible sources. After 1066 the manor remained a royal possession under William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book of 1086 names Baldwin the Sheriff of Devon as its holder at farm and records one virgate transferred to Robert de Pont Chardon. The manor later split into three parts: Braunton Dean, Braunton Abbots and Braunton Gorges. Robert de Sachville received the last of these in 1202 and King Henry III granted Braunton Abbots to Cleeve Abbey. St Brannock's Church has a Norman tower, a 13th century chancel and a mostly 15th century body, with 16th century carved bench-ends. Of 42 listed buildings near the centre, the church is Grade I, while Town Farm, Broadgate and Church House are Grade II*.
