A short history of Bracknell
Flint tools left at Amen Corner show people were here by about 10,000BC and a Bronze Age round barrow survives at Bill Hill. A church has stood at Easthampstead since Saxon times. The name appears in a Winkfield boundary charter of 942 as Braccan heal, which recent research reads as a hidden place where bracken grows. In the Middle Ages two small market villages formed, Old Bracknoll and New Bracknoll. Easthampstead Park served as a royal hunting lodge where Catherine of Aragon was sent until her divorce was settled. By the 19th century the two villages had merged into one market town known for brickmaking. Bracknell became a new town on 17 June 1949, planned for 25,000 people and enlarged in the 1960s for 45,000. It has 37 Grade II listed buildings.
