A short history of Bovey Tracey

Bovey Tracey was a settled Saxon community that took its name from the River Bovey. The name may appear earlier as Buui and the Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Bovi. After 1066 the manor passed to the de Tracey family, who gave the town its second name, first documented as Bovitracy in 1309. William de Tracy took part in the 1170 killing of Archbishop Thomas Becket at Canterbury and is thought to have rebuilt the parish church as penance. In the early 1200s Henry de Tracey set up a borough and in 1259 he received the right to a weekly market and an annual fair lasting three days. On 9 January 1646 Oliver Cromwell surprised part of Lord Wentworth's Regiment in the town and a battle on Bovey Heath the next day ended in victory for his army. Pottery making began here in the 1750s and carried on for around two centuries. Of 40 listed buildings near the centre, three are Grade II*: Nos 66 to 68 and 70 Fore Street, the Church of St John the Evangelist and The Manor House.
