A short history of Boston

A flood in September 1014 appears to have drawn the River Witham to the tidal stream beside the site. The 1086 Domesday Book does not name Boston, recording its income under Drayton, a manor held before 1066 by Ralph the Staller. Count Alan later took over the property. Boston grew into a notable port during the 11th and 12th centuries and in 1204 King John placed the town under the sole control of his bailiff. In 1369 Edward III made it a staple port handling wool. The name Botulfeston appears in 1460. Around 1470 the Hansards withdrew and foreign trade almost collapsed. Henry VIII seized the town's four friaries and granted a charter in 1545. Two Members of Parliament followed from 1552. In 1607 pilgrims attempting to leave for the Netherlands appeared at the court held in the Guildhall. Of 268 listed buildings in the area, four are Grade I: St Botolph's Church, Maud Foster Windmill and Granary, Fydell House and the Guildhall.
