The settlement began beside a crossing of the River Stort and traces of occupation in the area reach back to the Mesolithic period, with Bronze Age finds and a Roman road, Stane Street, begun around AD 50. A new Anglo-Saxon settlement followed and before 1066 the manor belonged to Edeva the Fair. Between 1066 and 1075 the Bishop of London, William the Norman, acquired it, which gave the town its name. King John had it dismantled in 1211 and rebuilding began the following year. Malting became important by the 16th century. Plague cut the population to around 600 by 1700.
