A short history of Bingham

The Coritani, a Briton tribe, are the first known people to have settled the area and the Romans later built a fortress north of the present town at Margidunum. Angles settled the village around the start of the 7th century and its name comes from a chief called Bynna, with "ham" meaning homestead. Christianity probably arrived in the second half of that century. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Binghehā and the district's freeholders were mostly Danes. Roger de Busli became the first Norman owner of the manor but died without an heir, so it passed to the King. A market charter followed in 1341. Under Elizabeth I the manor was held by Sir Bryan Stapleton and let to Thomas Leeke. During the Civil War Prince Rupert camped in the fields around Bingham and 700 Parliamentary soldiers sought refuge there. The railway arrived in 1851. Post-war redevelopment removed Stanhope Workhouse and the Rectory on East Street. The Church of St Mary and All Saints is Grade I listed, among 26 listed buildings near the centre.
