A minster church, St Edburg's, was probably founded around that time. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Berencestra, with the manors of Bicester and Wretchwick both held by Robert D'Oyly, the builder of Oxford Castle. Gilbert Bassett founded an Augustinian priory around 1183, endowed with land across several neighbouring parishes. Bicester headed a deanery of 33 churches before the 13th century closed. Of the town's 115 listed buildings St Edburg's is Grade I while The Old Priory with its garden walls and The Old Vicarage are Grade II*. Wretchwick deserted medieval settlement is a scheduled monument.
